Poll of the Week: Last Week's results and a new Important Question

Phew, so a ton of you(78!) voted on our Poll from last week concerning the Green Dragon mugs. Sadly for OAS an astounding 50% of you said that you've never used it, while most people said "Sometimes" and "If I remember to." Perhaps they should try harder to push this "Go Green" stuff..

Anyways it's time for a new Poll of the Week.(hopefully up soon after I'm done typing this post out) Hopefully all of you have heard of this crazy Financial Crisis going on right now. Banks are failing, and watching CNN is making me nervous. The Government came up with this c$700 Billion Dollar plan to try and use tax payer money to bail out all of the bad loans and crap that's bringin' these banks down.

Today, that plan failed to pass through the House of Representatives and people are freaking the fuck out. The stock market dropped today it's lowest point total literally EVER. So I want to use this week's poll to gauge how you are all feeling about this nutty stuff. Don't forget to answer it!

Want an insurance plan? Learn Mandarin.

As of this weekend, China has become the third nation in the world to successfully launch a spacewalk. Ignore it, embrace it, write books about it, but whatever you do, get a profit from it. Why worry about spending $700 billion to bail out insurance? We're one ocean away from all the insurance we need! Grab on while the going rate is cheap! What are we worried about? America isn't going to disappear, and with a big enough stake in the new guy, like any ripe elder we get to ride our own special kind of social security.

All this recent economic doom-talk leaving a bad flavor in your mouth? Give ol' Big Red of the Pacific a chew.

Palin Gets Pwned

CNN's Fareed Zakaria tears Sarah Palin a new one after her gibberish-filled interview with Katie Couric this past Wednesday. Check it out here- dude's got some sass.

Just a Small Reminder

I'm pretty positive I don't need to preach here on the importance of voting in this upcoming election. Instead this is a small reminder to register to vote!

Don't procrastinate registering though. The deadline to register and be eligible to vote in November is October 10th, so get on that!

So, How's this "Goin' Green" thing going so far?

So by now I'm sure all of us are aware of the school's big campaign this year to make this campus more "Green." Ya know, Eco-Friendly. So far they've ditched using trays in the dining halls, gotten better napkin dispensers, and also offer a 10% discount to anyone who buys coffee or coffee-esque drinks with their Green Dragon mugs. Among other things. (Full layout of their plan HERE)

I'm interested in finding out how this plan is going so far. How green are you guys being? Still taking a plastic bag at Mills to hold the Ben & Jerry's you could carry yourself? I am however most interested in how the use of the Green Dragon travel mugs is going.

Personally I think the mugs are a disaster. I've been using them a lot since I usually hit up Jazzman's once or twice a day, but every use is an exercise in frustration. The god damned top never stays on right and there's always a leak. Aside from the problems I have with the mugs' engineering I also don't feel like a lot of people are using them. C'mon folks, everyone living on campus got one of these suckers for free, and even though they're a bit faulty it's still worth using them!

As soon as I figure out how, I'm going to get a poll up where you can tell me if you've been using the mug or not, and how much. In the meantime tell me what you're doing to attempt to be a little greener!

Hello everyone! There's been a lot of people visiting this site who seem to really like what they see, which is absolutely awesome! We all look forward to hearing what you've heard!

Loud Music Makes You Drink More

This Psychological Study proves that yes, when you are out at the Sake-Club getting shitfaced, it's probably due to the fact that the music is so loud. That, and you go to school in Oneonta.

Moral of the story: next time you want that beezy at the bar to be just a little bit drunker, tell the bartender to pump up the tunes.

OMG GUYZ NEW FACEBOOK SUX.

So, how many of you have seen some variation of the title of this article all over your Facebook news feeds in the past couple of weeks?

I know I certainly have. Facebook's new design overhaul sure has people up in a ruckus. You'd think in an election year with two candidates spouting into microphones and video cameras about "Change" that we would be more open to new and different things. I guess not.

Now before everyone gets all upset with me let me be perfectly clear. I am not a huge fan of Facebook's new look. I was perfectly happy with the way things were going. However, in my opinion the new look is hardly big enough of a change to warrant all of the backlash against it. Plus I've heard a few of Facebook's more dubious "applications" have been nixed as a result of the new layout changes. I for one am thakful to have not been asked to be a Zombie for a while.

Anyway, if you must complain(Please do! Constructive complaining is fun!) I highly suggest sending your complaints directly to the Facebook developers by clicking on the "Send Feedback" link in the upper right hand corner while you're on Facebook. This way less of us will have to endure invitiations to "1 Million Babbling Monkeys Against the New Facebook!!1!!" groups.

Plastic Bags

Here is a little tidbit on the effects that plastic bags are having on our environment. Hopefully it will be a little eye opening.

Each year there are somewhere between 500 thousand and a trillion plastic bags consumed worldwide. Of these bags, only one percent are recycled. This is because it costs more to recycle a bag than it does to produce one.

So what happens to these bags?
Well, some are put into landfills, but the reason these landfills aren't overflowing is because tons of the plastic bags were being dumped into ocean fills. This is affecting aquatic life all over the globe. This is because plastic bags photodegrade. Over time they break down into small, toxic, petro-polymers. Because these microscopic particles contaminate our waterways and soil they eventually enter our food chain and....who wants that? This is only one of the long term effects short term effects are pollution and the fact that animals are mistaking these plastic bags for food. They attempt to eat them and choke and die.
So next time you are at Mills or Hunt or any store think to yourself: Do I really need that plastic bag? If you have few items the answer will usually be no. There are also other options other than plastic bags. Invest in reusable shopping bags. In the long run they will really pay off. You may be thinking but I am only person...I will not make a difference. False! If you buy groceries every week and use reusable bags you save 6-8 bags a week. That is 288 bags a year! And if you start doing it, others will too. There are some countries that have outlawed plastic bags altogether! All I am asking is that you think about it.

Boy, is he funny looking...

A Little Perspective eh?

So I believe it was around 2AM last night, when I had been tossing and turning for about 2 hours already that I gained a little bit of perspective and understanding.

For those who have no idea what in the hell I'm talking about let me be more clear. I'm referring to the unbelievable wind gusts that pounded this town last night. The noise and literal shaking of my dorm room kept me awake till literally around 4AM. So here's the perspective I speak of:

Those wind gusts were freaking me out, but they were absolutely nothing compared to the terrifying Hurricanes that have swept through Haiti, Cuba, and the Gulf Coast in the last few weeks. Think about it. Some of us get nervous when the wind makes that threatening whistle noise as it blows past our open windows, but imagine how people in Houston felt when Hurricane Ike's winds were blowing away bits of Reliant Stadium's roof. Crazy stuff.

My thoughts go out to all of the people down there picking up the pieces. Here's hoping we've seen the worst of this year's Hurricane season.

i-Doser

I was recently informed about a new product called i-Doser. I know this sounds like one of Apple's newest gadgets, but its not. It is basically a digital drug. The aim is that one listens to an MP3 of compiled sound waves to alter one's mental state. The subject should, ideally, be in a dark room with proper headphones. There are different tracks that gives one the same effects as certain drugs. For example, if you listen to "Marijuana," you supposedly get the same effects. Now, I don't know if this is a total scam or if it works. I have heard that it is total lies, but I've also heard that it completely works. Whatever the result may be I think that the concept of it is pretty spaceage-esque!

Update: If you want to try this, there are probably not ways to get it other than on the company's website, and you should probably not look on Rapidshare or BitTorrent. ;) -JL

Well, considering..

Considering that earlier this evening we got some free promotion from some WONY DJ's who were quite entertained by our "Anonymous Confessions" board and the "Overheard in Oneonta" section, I figured we should probably make sure our readers know what in the hell WONY is.(In other words, I am going to shamelessly plug it)

So, if you don't know. 90.9FM, WONY is SUCO's own student run radio station. (Website: here, there's also a webcast on the site) All of the DJ's are SUCO students who bring a wide variety of show formats including Metal, Indie, RPM, Punk, Jazz, and Acoustic music, a News Show on Sundays(12-2PM), and a Political Talk show(Poly Talk) on Sunday nights(8-10PM).

By the way the aforementioned News show is currently looking for more contributors. You don't have to be a DJ to contribute to the news show, so if you're interested in writing stories and investigating for the show, send any questions to wonynews@gmail.com.

Also, the WONY Public Relations department is currently hosting a T-Shirt design contest where the winner will have their design printed on this year's WONY T-Shirts. If you're interested in the contest send an e-mail to wonypr@gmail.com.

You know what really Grinds my Gears..

I'll tell ya what really grinds my gears: Having giant chunks of my life wasted by having a Librarian droll on for an hour or more about how to use the Library's search engines.

Seriously, just how many god damned times am I going to have to go through this?! I feel like it's been once for almost every class I've ever taken here. So considering this is my third year that means 20 times. 20.

Is it important that we all know the myriad of search engines available to us as SUCO students? Of course. However, it is absolutely not necessary for the Librarians to go through some sort of bastardized version of an Oxy-clean infomercial on "how to" actually use the damned search engines.

We all grew up with the information super-highway and we all know how to use a search engine. In fact, I can recall at least one time during every boring Librarian lecture I've ever sat through where the Librarian herself utterly failed at what she was trying to teach us to do!

So then, you might ask, what's my big idea on how they can reconcile this horrible situation? Well you know those yellow instruction sheets they always hand out before these things that list pretty much everything they walk you through? Just hand those out and let us go to town, freakin' DUH.

Rock to Cure Presents "Welcome Back Open-Mic Night"

(From Facebook group description):
"Rock To Cure's first open mic of the year is coming up September 10th, and we're starting the year off right with some awesome music, played outside on one of the last nights of nice weather Oneonta will be offering for a while!

Everything starts at Fine Arts' Outdoor Theatre at 6pm and will go until 9:30ish."

Out and About.

No lazy Sunday today, instead it was a day for a rad excursion into the wilds of the Oneonta hills. Destination: Table Rock. To get there, just walk up to Hartwick, hang a left past all the dorms, pass the "No Freshman" parking lot, and then follow the trail up the hill, take the left fork and voila, there's a great view. Nice to be on top of the hills for once instead of admiring them out of the dorm room. After a quick picnic it was off to do some more exploring in the woods, and by some fortuitous misstep, the intriguing forest path that we followed led us waaay out on Chestnut Street. No problem though, because we then happened upon one of the biggest antiques extravaganzas I have ever seen in my life. Ever.

Marketplace on Chestnut is three floors of antiquities, some old and some not-so-old. Well worth your time and the walk down Chestnut. There's something for everyone; today's find was a retro-looking clock for $5, though its actual degree of antiquity is debatable. Still, way cool...get out there and check it out.

Check out this site:

Subliminal Fast-Food Advertising? (Picture of the Week)

Sort of makes me want a big mac.

Article of Interest: Roommates

Was just browsing through digg.com this morning and stumbled across this intriguing article in U.S.A. today offering advice to incoming College Freshman on how to deal with their random new roommate(s).

A lot of the advice is incredibly sound, and the data the article puts out there is pretty interesting. Definitely recommend this as a read to any Freshman or people who want to take a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

It made me think of my roommates from Freshman year here. The first was a quiet and strangely aloof stoner type who was very different from myself. However, we were able to live peaceably for the first couple of months at school simply by respecting each other. Eventually we ended up switching roommates as part of a crazy three way roommate switch. My new roommate and I got along famously and ended up being roomates for the rest of Freshman year and all of my Sophomore year too.

My point, and I think the article's point too, is that only you and your roommate will decide how your relationship will go. However, it's safe to say that if you decide that this random person you've been forced to live with is your personal version of the devil then obviously you've set yourself up to not have a comfortable living situation. On the flipside of that I also don't think you should try and force a close friendship with your roommate either. Find a happy medium, and I am 100% sure you're life here will be 100% simpler.

Thoughts on the First Day of Classes.

I wince a bit and stretch myself out after the sun poking through my fourth story window on the first day of classes wakes me up. I notice immediately that once again my White Stripes poster has failed to stay tacked on my wall. This made me slightly more grumpy than normal as I rolled out of bed, but not nearly as grumpy as I was when I realized it was 9:30AM. “Holy freakin’ Christ…I slept through my first class.”

Sigh…..I’m sure we all have some interesting stories from our first day of this Fall semester. This is my third year here and my first as an upperclassman. It’s strange how now everything seems so familiar to me, yet at the same time so much has changed. I notice it whenever I look out my window and see how gutted Tobey Hall is, or whenever I visit friends’ apartments off campus. To tell the truth, I feel kind of old.

Although much has certainly changed over my three years here, some things will always be the same. The first day of classes always runs through the same routine. Beginning of course with the mad dash to get all of the free crap they give away in the Quad. This year they gave away some handy trinkets, such as a small squeezable football and a pen/highlighter. Then there was the obligatory weird/almost useless give away: the Frisbee that they printed this year’s CUAC calendar on.

Blah…so far the first day of classes makes a pretty bland story right? Well of course it does! It’s hard for me to think that for so many people this is their first time going through these same motions I’ve been through three times now, especially the god-awful free food giveaway extravaganza in front of the library every year. The school did sort of raise the stakes a bit this time around though. I have to give OAS some props in having free cotton candy and ice cream this time instead of just tons of cold cuts and hamburger buns.

On the other hand, that MC they had talking awkwardly though a microphone and putting his Ipod on shuffle every once in a while was truly, truly awful (Hey, who ended up winning that free Ipod, or signing up for the Phoneothon? Anyone? Beuler?). That awful MC was not the only joke of the day. I hope my friends and I weren’t the only ones who noticed the hilariously unfortunate misspelling of “WELCOME” on Jazzman’s sandwich board (picture hopefully coming soon). Thankfully when I walked past Jazzman’s again later on that evening and they had corrected their egregious mistake.

Heh, at any rate after that first day I am sure it’s safe to say that this year will be full of opportunities for me to vomit my opinions and observations of interest onto the internet. Welcome to Pwneonta.
