Article of Interest: Roommates

Was just browsing through digg.com this morning and stumbled across this intriguing article in U.S.A. today offering advice to incoming College Freshman on how to deal with their random new roommate(s).

A lot of the advice is incredibly sound, and the data the article puts out there is pretty interesting. Definitely recommend this as a read to any Freshman or people who want to take a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

It made me think of my roommates from Freshman year here. The first was a quiet and strangely aloof stoner type who was very different from myself. However, we were able to live peaceably for the first couple of months at school simply by respecting each other. Eventually we ended up switching roommates as part of a crazy three way roommate switch. My new roommate and I got along famously and ended up being roomates for the rest of Freshman year and all of my Sophomore year too.

My point, and I think the article's point too, is that only you and your roommate will decide how your relationship will go. However, it's safe to say that if you decide that this random person you've been forced to live with is your personal version of the devil then obviously you've set yourself up to not have a comfortable living situation. On the flipside of that I also don't think you should try and force a close friendship with your roommate either. Find a happy medium, and I am 100% sure you're life here will be 100% simpler.

  1. I think that as long as everyone communicates openly there won't be huge problems. I hate the fact that some roommates just complain about each other but never actually confront their issues.
