A couple of goofballs with wacky signage have been going around to various SUNY campuses touting their anti-homosexual messages, and today they made their way to SUCO.
Pretty quickly a large group of students organized an impromptu protest around the whackjobs and captured the attention of anybody who happened to be walking by including several faculty members and administrators.
A bunch of us from Pwneonta were there, and we're all wondering if you were too, and what you thought about the whole thing. Let us know what you made of today's events in the comment section of this post.

ReplyDeleteIt didn't accomplish anything on either en. Nothing was resolved and all sides seemed to keep their opinions.
ReplyDeleteWell of course all people kept to their sides - there were only, as it appeared to me, 2 people on the anti side.
ReplyDeleteWhat really impressed me is the efficacy and size of the response. It really impressed me - and impressed upon me a sense that I am on a much more tolerant campus than I ever thought before.
So if any protesters see this comment - THANK YOU! *.*
see its people like you that are the problem- you don't have to be gay to appreciate a person's right to do what makes them happy. The two "anti" people have the right to believe what they do but should have never verbally attacked students or faculty. I commend this school and everyone who protested along side with myself today for doing it in a peaceful and efficient way. It was an experience i will never forget
ReplyDeleteI was there today, after a friend sent me a text message about it... I only have one class on thursdays, so I was already back in my room. Anyway, I got down there, and it really floored me how so many people surrounded the two extremists and protested with such passion.
ReplyDeleteIt's important, too, to understand that God does NOT hate gay people! Those two whack-jobs had it all wrong. I guess my point is, don't hate God if you support gay rights. Love your neighbor as yourself-THAT'S the message they should have been preaching.
And anyway, who are they to go and try to push their beliefs on others? Who do they think they are? Also, who gave them permission to book the quad until 5?
*Tuesdays, sorry.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I saw this.. Basically, Christians who think gay is wrong. Fine. You're entitled to your own oppinon. But why be a dick and make a point about it? Why? Why the hell should you make it your duty to tell people that you are going to heaven, but gays are going to hell? Does it get you off to snob off to the "Lesser" by telling them that your way of life is better than theirs?
ReplyDeleteseriously thats sick man shut the hell up
ReplyDeleteIt's great to see that SUCO students have a passion for something! I feel we're so lax at this campus, it was great to feel excitment for something bigger than us.
ReplyDeleteI saw and heard the protest - I was very impressed with the level of energy that assembled so quickly...
ReplyDeleteQueer Crusher (Shit should I be calling you this?) if you were there you would have known that there was a guy and a girl making the demonstration (Some Reverend dude and his daughter), not just two guys.
ReplyDeleteDon't make trouble.
I am a Christian and a student, and was shocked by the "ministry" team. I am a part of several Christian clubs whose members were similarly upset, and we did not agree with his way of expressing his Christian beliefs.
ReplyDeleteIt was rude of that man to single out one group of people and judge them, and then call himself a Christian. We are not called to judge others, only God can judge us. He gave a bad name to Christians...
We are really nothing more than loving people who want to share Christ's love with others.
"I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." - Gandhi
We want to change that.
It was amazing to see something like that happen on this campus. It was incredible to get to be a part of that. I think it was probably a great thing for a lot of gay people to see how much support there is for them on this campus. Definitely makes me proud to be a student here.
ReplyDeleteTalking to some of the RAs about it, it sounded like this guy goes around to campuses to stir up trouble so that he can be kicked off or attacked, then turning around to sue the school for denying him his first right. Incredibly shady...
ReplyDeleteI'd like to personally thank everyone for their support on Tuesday. It was a very difficult thing for the community to go through, but the fact that we could come together like that really made me proud. I'd like everyone to realise that these two people are extremists and do not speak for all christians. Thank you again to everyone that was there on Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteI was an obnoxious part of the protest. I'm so glad that Oneonta students could come together and stand up for something they believe in. Even though nothing came of it, I think we were successful in being loud enough to block his words from being heard by those around us.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course both sides kept their opinions-he wasn't going to turn the gay population of Oneonta straight with the magic of a mass-produced vinyl banner. Don't be dumb.
The response was so quick because one of the E-Board of OMU saw them and immediately notified everyone in the club and their advisors.
The administrators gave them permission to book the quad because they said they were going to "preach the word of God," and only signed up the day before.
I'm also glad Brothers And Sisters In Christ came to the Open Minded Unity meeting to clarify that they do not believe the same things that Jim and Michelle were preaching.
Needless to say, they won't be back anytime soon.
people are assholes. as for "queercrusher" do you realize that if we wanted to. We could file a complaint and have you arrested just because you are anonymous does not mean we cant find you. It is amazing about technology. what you said is a threat and will not be tolerated.
